New Agreements on Research Funding and Academic Mobility as a Follow-up to the German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007 New scholarship programs between the DAAD and the MHESR

GERLS - German-Egyptian Research Long-term Scholarships

As an outcome of success achieved during the German-Egyptian Year of Science & Technology 2007, a cooperation agreement has been concluded between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Arab Republic of Egypt "MHESR” and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), Bonn to create a program offering up to 100 postgraduate scholarships for Egyptian doctoral candidates. The target group of this program is researchers who hold their M.A / MSc, degree which should generally not be older than 3 years.

Aim and duration of doctoral studies in Germany

Each year a group of researchers will be sent to Germany for doctoral scholarships in the scientific fields and priorities agreed upon by DAAD and MHESR. The GERLS program will be administered by the DAAD in conjunction with German universities and advisers. Generally speaking, the scholarships within this program are awarded for 12 months, subject to extension up to 42 months.

Types of the scholarship:

  • "Full Ph.D.” Scholarship:
    Target: in all fields of study except the ones mentioned under Specialization.
    Degree: Ph.D. will be awarded by a German university.
    Duration: up to 42 months.

  • "Channel” Scholarship:
    Target: in all fields of study except the ones mentioned under Specialization
    Degree: Ph.D. will be awarded by an Egyptian university
    Duration: up to 24 months.

  • "Specialization” scholarship:
    Target: for the study of medicine, fine/applied arts, architecture and music
    Degree: without resulting in a degree
    Duration: up to 24 months.

GERSS - German-Egyptian Research Short-term Scholarships

The German-Egyptian Research Short-term Scholarship GERSS is a program jointly funded by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, Bonn (DAAD) in order to finance short-term scholarships for young Egyptian scientists traveling to Germany. The target groups of the program are researchers enrolled in MSc, PhD programs and young Post Doctoral candidates. The scholarships may be awarded for a period from three to six months.

  • There are two calls for application annually one in mid October (Autumn Call) and the other in mid April (Spring Call).
  • Application forms can be filled out electronically as of 15th of October and prior to the 30th of November (Autumn Call) and as of 15th of February and prior to 31st March (Spring Call).
  • The online application form is available on the GERSS website http://www.mhesr-initiatives.org/gerss/.
  • In order to apply for the GERSS scholarship, you have to register yourself on the GERSS website.

GESP - New Mobility Grant for German-Egyptian Research Teams

The German-Egyptian Scientific Projects Scheme GESP is a new fund that supports scientific visits between Egyptian and German research teams. This program is co-financed by the Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research in Egypt (MHESR) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Germany.

Joint German Egyptian Research Fund between the MHESR and the BMBF German - Egyptian Research Fund (GERF)

Joint announcement

by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Arab Republic of Egypt (MHESR) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for regulations governing the funding of joint innovative projects in the field of applied research through the ‘Egyptian-German Research Fund’ ("Deutsch-Ägyptischer Forschungsfonds”) as a follow-up to the ‘German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007’

1. Objectives and legal basis

On the occasion of the closing event of the ‘German-Egyptian Year of Science and Technology 2007’ in Berlin on 6 December, the Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Hany Helal and the German Federal Minister of Education and Research Annette Schavan signed an agreement on the establishment of an Egyptian-German research fund for the support of joint application-oriented projects, to which each side will contribute €300,000 (equivalent to around 2.500.000 Egyptian Pound) per year. The grants are intended to give researchers – including young scientists - an opportunity to address new areas of scientific research and to promote bilateral research cooperation...
