Partnerorganisations in Germany
Federal Ministry of Education and Research of the Federal Republic of Germany
Europe without borders and the globalization of markets are characteristics of growing internationalization. International experience combined with tolerance and openness for other cultures are considered to be key competences of the future. Education enables people to make use of the opportunities of open borders and worldwide communication. Learning and research around the globe should be open to all people. The BMBF is creating the possibilities by means of international cooperation.

Service Centre for Electronic Research Support Information (ELFI)
ELFI is the service centre for research support information in Germany and is jointly operated by the Ruhr University of Bochum (Ruhr-Universität Bochum) and the GMD Research Centre for Information Technology. (GMD-Forschungszentrum für Informationstechnik GmbH).
ELFI supports the research support officers in their daily work. The service can also be used by academics and scientists. ELFI collects all information of relevance to research support (e.g. calls for tenders/bids, addresses of support awarding organisations and relevant contacts), collates these and makes them available in a customised format.
ELFI provides each user with a personal work base in which he/she can find the research information that is of importance and relevance to his/her work. Access to the personal work base is provided by a user name and password, which must be entered prior to each session for logging-in to the system. Users who do not yet have a working environment, user name or password must register themselves before the first session.

German Research Association ( DFG)
The Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) is the central organisation for promoting and supporting research at higher education institutions and other publicly financed research institutes in Germany.
The DFG homepage includes a list of Graduate Colleges (Graduiertenkollegs) supported by the DFG, listed on the basis of academic/scientific fields and locations. The lists contain the title of the college and a contact name as well as (where available) a link to that college.
The DFG homepage also offers a list of Collaborative Research Centres (Sonderforschungsbereiche) supported by the DFG, listed on the basis of academic/scientific fields. The lists contain the starting date and title of the Collaborative Research Centre as well as (where available) a relevant link to that center.

Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science
The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften e.V. (MPG) is an independent non-profit-making research organisation.
The MPG promotes and supports research carried out within its own institutes. These engage in pure research in the natural sciences, biosciences, arts and humanities. In 1998, the 81 institutes, research centres, laboratories and task forces had a staff of some 10,700, of which around 2,880 were academics and scientists. In 1997, the MPG also had around 6,500 scholarship holders, guest academics and scientists, plus doctoral/PhD candidates.
Users can search for MPG institutes on the basis of Sections, Institute Names or Locations (map) and so find the relevant pages. The section on "Publications" includes access to the weekly "Research Reports" and other products. These reports provide information on the latest research findings as published in scientific journals. A database additionally offers users the opportunity to search through publications for key words/special fields as well as to search for contacts/experts. The site also presents the MPG's international cooperation agreements as well as the exchange of academics and scientists (in 1996 involving some 2,600 foreign guests) and participation in joint research institutes.

Fraunhofer Society
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (FhG) is the leading applied research organisation in Germany. Its 50 research institutes employ a staff of some 9,000, mainly scientists, academics and engineers. Branches in the United States and Asia promote international cooperation.
This site offers five search options: by FhG institutes: by locations (in Germany and abroad - with maps), alphabetically, by research fields, by given key words. Each institute is presented with its focus areas, special equipment and contacts.
The "Publications” section allows users to order brochures online on various specialist fields. This is free of charge. The FhG annual reports (1995-1 998) are also available online, while issues of the "Fraunhofer-Magazin” can be downloaded as PDF files as from issue 1/1996. The interdisciplinary bibliographical database "Fraunhofer-Publica” contains remarks and information on publications issued by all FhG institutes since 1980.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH)
The AvH enables highly-qualified foreign doctorates/PhD holders to come to Germany to complete a long-term research project.
The AvH website describes all the programmes offered by the AvH in detail and provides an opportunity to download the application forms in three different formats. The latest news on the work of the AvH can be found in the new online magazine "Humboldt Kosmos”. The detailed "Guide on a Stay in Germany” for visiting scientists is also new, offering plenty of tips, for example, on finding a place to live, buying a car and other everyday problems. The Guide can be found in the "Fellowships and Awards” section under the heading of "Support in Germany”. The services of the AvH are complemented by a list of Humboldt Clubs, which also serve as contact points for advising new research fellows before they leave to complete their stay in Germany.

The sixteen German Helmholtz Centres have joined together to form the "Hermann von Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren” (HGF). They are involved in research and development in the fields of science and engineering as well as biology and medicine.
Each Helmholtz Centre is presented in a short portrait, while a link takes the user to the centre’s services. Various HGF publications can be ordered free of charge by e-mail, e.g. from the serious entitled "Research Topics” or "Documentation”. Further information on the work of the HGF is to be found in the press releases.
